North Queensland Getaway allows you to sleep on one of the natural wonders of the world Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, spend a day exploring the the beauty of the oldest living rainforest on the planet the UNESCO listed Daintree Rainforest and another discovering our North Queensland Outback and Chillagoe’s spectacular limestone caves, small galleries of Aboriginal rock art, jagged limestone outcrops and an historically significant mining site. A park that is rich in natural and cultural heritage.

Our North Queensland Getaway package can be done in any order and you can also have a days break in between if you wish.

Day 1 – Outback and Chillagoe Caves

Chillagoe lies within a belt of limestone approximately 5 km wide and 45 km long. Travelling 215 km or 3 hours’ drive west of Cairns heading to the northern end of the Atherton Tablelands and over the Great Dividing Range.

You will embark on a remarkable journey back to prehistoric time when dinosaurs ruled the earth.

Stopping at the Mareeba Wetlands for morning tea and a cruise in this magnificent setting seeing the Giant Lotus Lilly’s up close along with so many different Water Birds as well.

From here you will travel through the back blocks of this wetland area viewing Wallabies, Emus and other wildlife and then along the agricultural paddocks of this fertile area, eventually crossing over the Great Divide and into the Western watershed.

You are now in the Australian Outback.

Take a step back in time as we travel through historical towns and rolling hills rich in mineral eventually giving way to towering limestone karsts scattered around Chillagoe Township.

After delving into the history of the copper smelters it is time for lunch at a unique outback pub.

Before setting off to  the Chillagoe cave tour after which you will start heading back to Cairns.

Outback & Chillagoe Caves Itinerary

What to Bring

  • Money for afternoon tea
  • hat, camera, closed in footwear, comfortable clothing, sunscreen and water bottle
  • Please ensure that you wear closed in footwear for the cave tour please. No Thongs or High Heels on this tour.
  • A reasonable level of fitness is required for this tour as there are steps into the caves.
  • The tour may be closed or itinerary changed due to the wet season where conditions may close roads and access to the caves. 

Day  2 – 3  The Great Barrier Reef

The Ultimate way to see one of Australia’s Remarkable gifts, the “Great Barrier Reef”.

Live and sleep on the Reef and see it at its best, day and night.

Reef Encounter stays out on the Great Barrier Reef travelling to different Reef Sites. Transfers to Reef Encounter are daily via our Transfer Vessel Reef Experience.

Our Liveaboard Snorkel Adventure can be enjoyed by people of all ages, even with limited swimming ability.

Time to snorkel! With six water sessions a day so you can choose when you want to snorkel and when you want to relax or enjoy the other activities onboard.

Sunrise at the Reef One of the greatest attractions for choosing to sleep at the reef is the option to do a dawn snorkel. As in any eco system dusk and dawn are the busiest times of the day and can be the best time to be in the water! Can you imagine a better way to begin your day than watching the sun come up over the ocean and going for a morning splash?

Experienced swimmer or snorkeler? Our crew will show you to the best patches of coral and can tell you where to find the marine marvels that call the reef their home.

Never snorkelled before? Need some assistance in the water? Our friendly and professional team are always ready to jump in and assist everybody to have fun and enjoy the magic that the reef has to offer, ensuring that you are comfortable with your equipment and introduce you to some of our friendly fish!

Buoyancy aids such as snorkelling vests, wetsuits and noodles maintain all the freedom of movement while comfortably allowing you to stay at the surface and observe the marine life beneath.

What to Bring

  • Overnight bag – If you wish to store any excess luggage we are happy to do so in our office at 100 Abbott street Cairns.
  • For safety reasons Reef Encounter has a “No Shoe” policy. (There is no need to bring extra pairs of shoes)
  • Cash or credit card for purchases of snacks from the bar / souvenirs for sale on-board or underwater camera hire.
  • Sun hat, swimming clothes, sunscreen, sunglasses, light casual clothing.
  • As the air-conditioning is on a set temperature for the heat during the day it can become quite cool in the evenings, even just being on the Great Barrier Reef can be cooler at night-time, therefore a light lo pullover, cardigan should be taken

Day  4 – Daintree Rainforest

Today you will be heading to the World Heritage Daintree Rainforest. Magnificent coastal rainforest and pristine tropical beaches stretching from the sugar town of Mossman to the Bloomfield River and all within 3 hours from Cairns.

Travelling  from Cairns to Cape Tribulation (the headlands of the Daintree Rainforest) along one of the most scenic coastal roads in Australia.

During your day you will pass through one of Cairns most beautiful beach suburbs of Palm Cove.

Continuing your journey north stopping at Rex lookout for views back over towards the mountains of the Great Dividing Range.

Onto the seaside village of Port Douglas, enjoying a tour around town plus flagstaff hill overlooking four mile beach and the historical St Mary’s by the Sea.

On the road again to the southern edge of the Daintree National Park – the magical “Mossman Gorge”. Surrounded by lush rainforest, where the clear mountain river cuts through thick rainforest and tumbles over boulders on its journey to the sea.

Enjoy a morning tea of bush scones then a guided walk in dense tropical rainforest.

Heading further north  towards the Daintree Tea House for a delicious lunch in a setting unlike any other.

After Lunch you will join a small and personalised tour on the Daintree River.

Your Daintree river cruise will take you through the domain of the large estuarine crocodiles.

Egrets wade near mangroves in the murky water of the river where the crocodile’s wait patiently for a meal.

Crossing the mighty Daintree River on a cable ferry, you are now entering the Cape Tribulation section of the Daintree national park.

This is where it all begins to change. You will feel like you have entered a different world with Rainforest towering over narrow winding roads.

Stopping at Alexandra lookout where you will have to opportunity for some stunning photographs.
